And so it begins

I've been giving this some thought for a while and have been admiring blogs by some of my friends, so here goes nothing. I don't really know where I'm going with this but I'm sure that over time it will take some sort of thematic shape.

By the way, I'm sitting on my couch watching the Olympics tonight. Lindsey Vonn has won the women's downhill race and she now stands on top of the podium as our national anthem plays. It always gets me! I weep like a baby anytime I watch a medal ceremony when an American wins the gold. I always admire the hearts of these athletes and wonder at what point they discovered their tremendous drive and desire to achieve something so monumental.

As a child I spent many hours fantasizing about becoming famous, whether as an Olympic athlete, professional tennis player (usually when I was watching Wimbeldon), or a professional actress/singer. I never really pursued athletic activities in my youth - I was something of a couch potato and although Title IX was enacted when I was in elementary school it didn't really make an impact on girls' sports where I lived until after I had passed the age when I would have gotten involved. By the time it blossomed in the small south Alabama town where I grew up, I was a slightly overweight teenager who was way too self concious and too much of a perfectionist to try something new that I might not be able to do well. I played a little tennis with my friends, but did more dreaming about athletic adventures than actually pursuing them.

Well, my laptop has just informed me that my battery is low so it's the sign for me to end this first post and to go to bed. I have resolved to get up in the morning and start my Couch to 5K training. Thankfully, I discovered that I enjoy certain athletic pursuits, but it took until my thirties to figure this out. Well past my physical prime. But, my hat's off to those young people who discover their passion and pursue it to the best of their ability. Congratulations Lindsey Vonn, Shawn White and all of our Olympic athletes.
